This talk explores Jesus’s Jewishness, focusing specifically on his observance of Jewish law and practice. We begin by looking at how the Gospels, our only direct sources for the historical Jesus, portray Jesus as a Jew. Second, we will glance at some of the ways in which Jesus’ Jewishness has been construed in modern scholarship — for better or worse. We will then move to a more detailed look at two ancient portraits of Jesus: the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of John. Finally, we will reflect on the implications of Jesus’s Jewishness for history, scholarship, and Jewish-Christian relations in our own day.
