The 2022 National Communication Association Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award for advancements to applied communication theory and method was awarded to Yael Warshel, for her book, Experiencing the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Children, Peace Communication and Socialization, published by Cambridge University Press in 2021.

Dr. Yael Warshel holds her 2022 National Comunication Association Sue DeWine Distinguished Scholarly Book Award.
The plaque honoring Dr. Warshel and her accomplishments was handed out on November 19 at the 108th annual meeting of the National Communication Association, the flagship US association for the study of the field of communication.

Reviewers who awarded the prize to Dr. Warshel, wrote as their rationale for why:

“This is a fascinating book.” “This unflinching, carefully detailed study shows great intentions and expense yielding none of three intended effects because the viewers …. were grounded in the reality of the Palestinian/Israeli separation. The ‘two street solution’ meant to bring characters on [Palestinian and Israeli] Sesame Street together were unconvincing.” “Scholars often want to prove they’ve found ‘the answer,’ especially when communication/media hold the key (because that’s ‘our team’).” “I can’t think of a more well researched book that details a spectacular failure.”

“[Yael Warshel’s Experiencing the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Children, Peace Communication and Socialization’s] scholarly contribution cannot be mistaken.” “This book provides a model for researchers who want to tackle important issues through applied methods. The author provides a guide for future PeaceComm studies by carefully describing the actions taken by herself, the choices made by producers and viewers, and lessons learned.” “Studying conflict interventions provides valuable lessons for current/future conflicts… .” “ The application spans several years, borders, and methods.” “This book deserves recognition as among the best the [National Communication Association’s] Applied Communication Division has produced.”

We are proud to have Dr. Warshel as a faculty member, and we congratulate her on this accomplishment!
